Aliens from the planet Gahranii arrive in the H.E.R.O. universe! They are here to study the meteor fragments (which they call “The Dark”) orbiting earth that gave the supers their powers. Some time ago, the Dark also affected the Gahranii and it seems like they all have some sort of power. They are peaceful and friendly, but unfortunately, their ship was followed by pirates intent on destroying them. Fortunately, Diva and Firestorm are able to thwart the pirate attack. (Firestorm has some really cool powers).

A genetics lab experimenting on the meteor causes some animals and scientists to mutate. The mutation gives them tremendous bloodlust, and they kill (and eat) everyone in the lab. The dogs are incredibly vicious and escape the lab and attack some people. Diva intervenes but is badly wounded. Ninja Tiger is able to save her and defeat the dogs.

The heroes figure out which genetic lab involved but don’t know what they are getting into. One hero is killed and another permanently maimed. It takes a large group off heroes to defeat the mutants. The battle was appropriately very bloody and action packed. I was not sure what would happen given the death and maiming of other heroes. I think it's pretty amazing that the author was willing to kill off a character. I guess no one is safe in the H.E.R.O universe.

The book ends with the heroes attacking the pirate starship, and capturing it.

Several new heroes were introduced and I particularly enjoyed Rayna, finding her and her creatures delightfully weird. Razorwing was also very intriguing - like a mutant Batman. I wonder if the Gahranii will become permanent H.E.R.O.S.

If the quality of these fun stories continues I might have to purchase the entire series. For now, book 5 coming up!

HERO Dark Research eBook Kevin Rau Reviews

The editor of this book so f-up it was terrible. The first few chapters of this story started with completely different characters that I put this story aside thinking that this series was going away from the people who I like. Then when i came back to this story it was totally awesome.
So far, I have not found a book in this series that I have not loved. Excellent action and very intriguing characters. I am so involved with the characters now that I personally feel like they are real to me. Sick, I know.
More interesting characters in a "realistic" world of superpowers and aliens. Nice to learn more of what caused the powers. I continue to enjoy the "simple" side effects that result when doing everyday things with sudden superpowers! Great addition to the series!
The fourth book in an excellent series, this novel brings Aliens into the mix. Psystar, Spartan, and Black Tiger have to team up with some of the other heroes to combat some new enemies that appear. The author also goes a bit deeper into the risks that the heroes are taking. Some of the returning heroes get some more time being focused on, and I have to admit that I like Razorwing quite a bit and I look forward to seeing more of him.

Some of the recurring issues that the previous novels had appear here, grammatical and spelling errors, but the story will easily make you overlook these minor issues.
I like this series and its characters. If you like comic books, these stories are like comic books with muscles.
3 stars is a little harsh, this is a fun series and this is a fine addition to it.
My only criticism is that the main characters are a little ham fisted, but every book in the series is a fun read and this is no exception.
Kevin Rau delivers what he promises -- a fun, evolving story of super powered humans, aliens and the future worlds he sees them building. I particularly enjoy what some of his characters are doing on Mars and look forward to seeing that develop further.

With great power comes great responsibility -- or hideous villainy. Rau does not pull his punches. People die heroically stopping banal evil. Monsters gleefully slaughter innocent bystanders. Criminals with deliberate, murderous intent, ambush heroes. Heroes accidentally break things. Villains accidentally fix things. Mistakes and confusion divide people. Caring and planning bring people together. It's what we might rationally expect from a world where random 'gifts' of super powers can happen to anyone.

Be prepared for a jet sled ride through world-shaking events crammed into a tiny slice of time, snap decisions on incomplete information, nasty wounds, horribly inadequate hydration and 'good enough' solutions for a crazy enjoyable universe.
