This book is a great resource for understanding common causes of joint pain and is especially useful for athletes. However, as with anything medical related get a professional diagnosis from a physician - preferably one who specializes with injuries to the specific joint in question. Also be very careful with some of the recommended treatments, especially corticosteroids for tendinopathy. The book states this may be the only thing that works for patellar tendinosis. It has long been proven that corticosteroids do not help with this condition and can actually make it worse. The first edition of this book was published in the 1970's and it needs to be updated to reflect current research.Tags : Listen to Your Pain: The Active Person's Guide to Understanding, Identifying, and Treating Pain and Injury [Ben E. Listen to Your Pain The Active Person Guide to Understanding Identifying and Treating Pain and Injury Ben E Benjamin Gale Borden 9780140066876 Books Reviews
We love this book in our house. I have purchased 5 or 6 of them over the years and at least 2 of them have been loaned out and then disappeared. Have given some as gifts to family members (that way they don't have to borrow ours). The book is well illustrated and very helpful in diagnosing and pinpointing a problem. It then gives ways to treat the injury. We have found it very helpful over the years.
This is one of the best books anyone can buy for their health. The author clearly describes each area of the body, the pains that can occur, their cause, and the methods to correct the problem.
I used this book when I had a Knee injury. It gives tests you can do to determine exactly what you have injured, and what you can do about it yourself, and when to go to the doctor.
This book is a wonderful resource. My family and friends are always asking for my "pain book" so they can find exercises or diagnostic tests for their sports injuries etc. In fact after one of them made off with it I'm now buying a 2nd copy. If I or my family have a muscle pain or injury it's nice to be able to read up in the book to add to what a doctor has said or to find relief without having to make a doctors visit (of course you have to use your own discretion about when you need to make the visit and when the book can replace/add to the visit). If you are active or at risk for repetitive strain injuries I would highly recomend this book.
I received my first copy of "Listen to Your Pain" by Ben Benjamin in 1988 from my first massage therapist. I have referred to it year after year for the best diagnostic and treatment advice for any/all injuries. I was researching a knee injury online the other night; I always include "ben Benjamin" in my search to see what he says about the injury. That is when I came across this newest edition of "Listen to Your Pain." I ordered it with the fastest shipping and as usual came through with getting it here on Saturday morning! I turned to the "knee" section and right away found THE EXACT symptoms and description to my injury. This is an issue I have been dealing with for over 2 years and has responded to no treatents. Now I know where to go to properly address this issue. Get this book if you work out or have suffered any type of pain/injury. Ben Benjamin is 2nd to none in helping to diagnose and treating injuries and all without seeing you in person. His practice is only about 2 1/2 hours away from my home and if his book wasn't so good at telling how to fix stuff, I would not hesitate in going there. Don't question it, get it!
I have used this book as a reference for many years. Information, tips, diagrams help to provide guidance to self care for many injuries and also a guide to when you really do need to see a doctor.
I bought the first edition while in massage school back in 1994. I had to finally duct tape the binding on that book so I figured I buy the next edition. the paper in that book is already yellowing and it seems like the pages are getting brittle. The book from the 90's is dong fine except for binding. The information is good in either edition.
